# Most organisations don't have an AI problem, they have an innovation problem

`AI`

It's difficult to attend a leadership meeting today without hearing the same question - "What are we doing about AI?"

That pressure is understandable. Organisations are seeing competitors launch AI-powered products, teams are experimenting with new tools, Boards are asking questions and customers are developing expectations. The instinctive response is often to focus on the technology itself: Which platform should we adopt? Which model should we use? Where can we automate? But after working with organisations navigating significant technology shifts such as this, I've come to believe that AI is rarely the real challenge. More often than not, the challenge is innovation.

The organisations thriving with the addition of AI aren't necessarily the ones with the most advanced technology, but they are the ones with cultures that already know how to adapt. They know how to experiment, challenge assumptions and test ideas quickly and learn from failure. Most importantly, they know how to connect innovation to measurable outcomes.

This distinction matters. Adopting AI is relatively easy but creating value with AI is considerably harder. Many organisations are currently generating a large number of experiments, prototypes and proofs of concept. Which on the surface looks like progress. But activity and impact are not the same thing.

Innovation without strategic purpose creates noise, but too much control stifles experiment. The organisations creating genuine advantage understand how to balance both. They give people permission to explore new possibilities while maintaining a clear connection to business objectives. They encourage curiosity, but they also demand evidence. And they remain open to change without becoming distracted by every new development.

This isn't unique to AI. We've seen the same pattern with mobile technology, cloud computing and digital transformation more broadly. The technology changes, but the organisational challenge remains remarkably consistent: Can we identify opportunities quickly? Test assumptions efficiently? Learn faster than our competitors? And pick the best bets to build out from experiment to full product. Those questions matter far more than any individual tool.

The most important investment organisations can make today isn't necessarily in AI platforms, it's in building the capabilities required to make sense of change. That means developing innovation muscle, creating environments where experimentation is encouraged and equipping teams with the skills, confidence and support required to explore new opportunities responsibly.

It also means recognising that technology alone has never been a sustainable competitive advantage. The organisations that thrive over the next decade won't be defined by how quickly they adopted AI, they'll be defined by how effectively they learned to adapt. Because in the end, AI isn't a technology challenge, it's an innovation one.
