# Best AI Consultancies for Mid-sized UK Companies (2026)

![Best AI consultancies for mid-sized UK companies 2026](https://www.andabove.com/content-media/press/press-particles-circle.gen.webp)

A mid-sized UK company needs an AI consultancy that can take one use case from a first conversation to a system running in production, with people who stay long enough to hand it over to your team. A strategy on its own is rarely enough at this size, because there is seldom a spare team to build what it recommends. This guide ranks seven specialist options for anyone choosing an AI consultancy in the UK at mid-market size, using public evidence from each firm's own website, reviewed on 19 October 2026. &above publishes this guide and ranks itself first. No firm paid for a place. For the large firms, such as McKinsey, Accenture, and Deloitte, read our separate review of the [best AI consulting firms in London and the UK](https://www.andabove.com/feed/best-ai-consulting-firms-london-uk-2026.md).

## What a mid-sized UK company needs from an AI consultancy

Mid-sized companies have enough process, data, and customers for AI to pay back, but they rarely have an AI engineering team, and a multi-year programme from a large consultancy is out of proportion to the first problem. The work has to start small and still reach production.

A good mid-market AI consultancy helps you pick one use case worth doing, proves it on your own data, and builds it into the systems your team already uses. The people who scope the work build it. When the system is live, someone on your side can run it and change it, because the consultancy will not be there for ever.

Many AI consultants in the UK can talk about strategy. The test for any AI consulting company is shorter. Can it show a system it built that runs in production? Who will do the work, and will they sit with your team? What will you own, and who will run it, once the engagement ends?

## How we ranked this shortlist

To qualify, a firm had to publish AI consulting services that a mid-sized UK company can buy, and list a UK office or base on its own website. We then ordered the firms on five criteria, in this order of weight.

Named production work comes first. A live, named system with a measured result counts most. A pilot, roadmap, or training programme counts for less, and a claim with no public evidence gets no credit. Fit for a mid-sized budget and team comes second: whether the firm says it works with companies of this size, and whether the first piece of work is small. UK presence comes third. Engagement model comes fourth: who does the work, whether they work inside your team, and how the scope is set. Ownership after the build comes fifth: what the firm says about handover, documentation, and who runs the system once it is live.

We used only each firm's own website, and every result is as the firm reports it. We have not audited them. We did not use review scores, awards, or directory rankings, and we left out prices, because quotes for different scopes do not compare well. This is an editorial ranking. &above publishes it and ranks itself first, so weigh our entry with that in mind. Each firm's website may have changed since our review.

## The shortlist: AI consultancies for mid-sized UK companies (2026)

### 1. &above

&above is an AI consultancy and product development agency based in Southwark, London. It automates the workflows a team runs every week and builds the AI products its customers use, with the same delivery model for both. We hire the AI engineers, we manage them, and they work embedded in your team, in your standups and your repositories, against a scoped workflow. When the harder question is what to build, product managers and designers join the same team. The [forward-deployed engineers](https://www.andabove.com/services/forward-deployed-engineers.md) page explains the model, and the [services](https://www.andabove.com/services.md) page sets out the route: Workflow Design or a proof of concept first, then embedded delivery.

The production proof is public. For Google Cloud, &above engineers embedded with Google's own teams built the Gemini Sales Sidekick, an agent system that connects Cloud's Sales Hub, Salesforce, and the intranet in one tool. The case study reports [5,000 monthly active sellers and a 64% time saving against a sample manual time](https://www.andabove.com/work/google/scaling-googles-salesforce-with-custom-solutions.md). For Tesco Retail Media, engineers embedded in the business built an Auto Compliance module inside the advertising workflow. It checks uploaded creative against hundreds of Tesco-specific rules before manual review, and it works within existing infrastructure and legacy APIs. Getting creative live had taken up to four weeks, and the case study reports that it [now moves through the system in days](https://www.andabove.com/work/tesco/retail-media-from-weeks-to-live-in-days.md). For Sage, a one-day AI Launchpad workshop led to a [working prototype of a Creative Intelligence Agent](https://www.andabove.com/work/sage/disparate-data-to-creative-intelligence.md) on Gemini and Google Cloud.

On ownership, &above says that capability transfers to your team as the work ships and that what it builds is yours. The three case studies above are with large enterprises, so for a mid-sized buyer the case rests on the model: one scoped workflow, senior engineers that &above hires and manages, and a system your own people can run afterwards. This is our own guide, so read the case studies on the [AI agency](https://www.andabove.com/services/ai-agency.md) page and judge the evidence before you shortlist us.

### 2. Fifty One Degrees

[Fifty One Degrees](https://51d.co/?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) describes itself as a UK and US AI consultancy for mid-market businesses, typically £5m to £250m in turnover, with a London office on Great Portland Street. Its services include AI agents, phone automation, and data science. It says that its senior practitioners embed inside your team, join your standups, work in your tools, and hand over code, documentation, and capability. Its [AI for SMEs page](https://51d.co/solutions/ai-for-smes/?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) says that the client owns everything built.

Its clearest production evidence is the [Heatable case study](https://51d.co/case-study-heatable-accelerating-growth/?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026). Fifty One Degrees built two AI agents that the page describes as live in production. The aftercare agent, it says, resolved 48% of inbound aftercare without a ticket reaching the team, and the solar agent drafts network operator paperwork for a project manager to review and send. Fifty One Degrees fits a mid-market company with no in-house AI engineers that wants an embedded team to build one agent and train its people to run it.

### 3. OpenKit

[OpenKit](https://openkit.co.uk/?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) is an AI consultancy and engineering firm with offices in Cambridge and Durham. It offers an AI audit, engineering, agents, and governance work built around an AI charter. Its [AI Implementation](https://openkit.co.uk/ai-services/ai-implementation?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) service puts an OpenKit AI lead and team inside your business to work through your AI roadmap from one prioritised backlog. The page says that each item is written up so your team can run it without OpenKit.

In its [House of Hackney case study](https://openkit.co.uk/portfolio/house-of-hackney?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026), OpenKit audited all ten departments, wrote a company-wide AI charter, and set up a managed Claude environment and training. It then automated the finance team's reconciliation work, which the case study says gave that team twenty hours a week back. OpenKit fits a mid-sized company that wants an audit and clear rules for AI before it builds, and a dedicated lead to work through the backlog after that.

### 4. Softblues

[Softblues](https://softblues.io/?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) describes itself as a London-based AI practice for mid-market firms in the UK and Ireland, with regulated sectors first. Alongside rolling out AI tools such as Claude and Microsoft 365 Copilot, its [AI automation](https://softblues.io/ai-automation?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) offer takes one costly process end to end, starting with a paid process discovery, typically two to four weeks, that maps the process before anyone writes code. The client keeps the map and a costed plan whether or not it builds, and after go-live the page describes monitoring and a named owner on the client's side. Softblues also [places engineers in client teams](https://softblues.io/hire-ai-experts?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026).

Its case studies state their status openly. For [Roof Maker](https://softblues.io/case-studies/ai-voice-assistant-roofmaker?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026), Softblues built an AI voice agent that the page lists as in production on the support line, answering inbound calls and logging a ticket for each one. At [Key Capital](https://softblues.io/case-studies/key-capital-claude-adoption?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026), nine weekly training sessions led to 35 of 45 staff using Claude several times a week, and the page says that agent work has not started. Softblues fits a mid-sized company in a regulated sector that wants AI tools rolled out with care, or a costed discovery before it automates one process.

### 5. Faculty

[Faculty](https://faculty.ai/en-gb/ai-services?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) is an AI specialist with a London office on Old Street. It publishes services from AI strategy through development and operations, plus AI safety. Its [Cera case study](https://faculty.ai/en-gb/ourwork/cera?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) describes a risk model that ranks home-care users by their likelihood of hospital admission, and reports that admissions roughly halved. The case studies on its services page are with the NHS and Cera, and the page does not mention company size. Faculty fits a mid-sized company whose core problem is a prediction or decision problem that needs specialist machine-learning work, more than one that needs a workflow built into its existing tools.

### 6. Helium42

[Helium42](https://helium42.com/?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) is a London-based AI consultancy with a second office in Hamminkeln, Germany. Its [AI consultancy page](https://helium42.com/ai-consultancy?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) says that the offer is built for organisations of 200 to 1,500 employees. Its route is education-led: discovery, workshops for leaders and staff, implementation alongside your team, then knowledge transfer, with every decision documented so your people can run the tools without Helium42.

Its [about page](https://helium42.com/about-us?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) reports client results, but the site does not link to case studies for them, so we gave its production evidence less weight. Helium42 fits a mid-sized company whose first need is to train its people, with sales and marketing as the likely first place to build.

### 7. Elevate AI

[Elevate AI](https://www.elevateai.co.uk/ai-consulting?utm_source=andabove.com&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=best-ai-consultancies-mid-sized-uk-companies-2026) is based in Solihull and offers AI consulting and managed outbound sales for UK businesses. Its consulting is a paid engagement that ends with a prioritised, costed implementation roadmap. The page says that the roadmap has value whether Elevate AI, your own team, or another provider delivers it, and that implementation is optional and scoped separately. Its published case study is a roadmap for an electrical contractor, not a live system. Elevate AI fits a smaller company that wants an independent plan before it chooses who builds.

### Firms we reviewed and left out

We also reviewed Alice Labs. Its website lists a Stockholm head office and no UK office, so it did not meet the UK presence test. We could not load Brainpool's website during our review, so we left it out rather than describe it from third-party sources.

## Specialist consultancy or big firm: when each makes sense

A large consultancy makes sense when AI is one part of a wider transformation across many markets, systems, and regulators, and you need risk and assurance work at that scale in the same contract. Our review of the [best AI consulting firms in London and the UK](https://www.andabove.com/feed/best-ai-consulting-firms-london-uk-2026.md) covers McKinsey, Accenture, Deloitte, IBM, and the other large firms, so we have not ranked them again here.

For most mid-sized UK companies, a specialist AI consultancy is the better first call. The first piece of work is smaller, the people who scope it are closer to the people who build it, and it can start with one workflow rather than a programme. The trade-off is breadth. A specialist will not run your ERP migration alongside the AI work, so check that the first use case does not depend on one. If you are still growing from scale-up to mid-sized, our list of the [best AI agencies for scale-ups](https://www.andabove.com/feed/best-ai-agencies-for-scale-ups-2026.md) covers firms that suit an earlier stage.

## Embedded delivery vs strategy-only engagements

When a mid-sized AI project stalls after the pilot, the reasons are usually ordinary. The consultancy delivers a strategy or a prototype, and the build lands on an internal team that is already full and has never built an AI system, so the prototype stays a prototype. Or the people who built the pilot move to their next client, the business rules change, and nobody updates the system. These are not model problems. They are problems of who does the work and who owns it.

A strategy-only engagement, such as a costed roadmap, is the right call when you have a team that can build, or want an independent plan before you choose a builder. It is the wrong call when the plan will land on a team with no spare time.

Embedded delivery puts the people who build the system inside your team. At &above, that means we hire the AI engineers, we manage them, and they work in your standups and your repositories on a scoped workflow, accountable for it in production. You do not carry the hiring risk or the management load, and because the engineers build alongside your people, the capability stays when the engagement ends. Fifty One Degrees, OpenKit, and Softblues each describe their own way of working inside the client's team, so ask each one who manages the people day to day.

Our guide to [embedded AI engineers vs traditional consultancies](https://www.andabove.com/feed/embedded-ai-engineers-vs-traditional-consultancies.md) compares the two models. A Google Cloud VP of Sales Enablement described the difference on our [services](https://www.andabove.com/services.md) page: "Having the &above team embedded meant we moved at a pace that would have been impossible otherwise. They became part of us - not a vendor."

## Buyer checklist for a mid-sized company

Ask to see a live system, not a demo: which system it writes to, how many people use it, and what the firm measured before and after. If the firm's best example is a pilot, a roadmap, or a training programme, that is useful to know, and it should change how you scope the first piece of work.

Ask who will do the work. Find out whether the people in the pitch are the people who will write the code, whether they will sit in your team, and who hires and manages them. Ask what happens if one of them is the wrong fit.

Ask what the first piece of work is and what you keep if you stop there. A short discovery or proof of concept on your own data should come before a large build, and end with a clear decision.

Ask who owns it after go-live. Confirm that you own the code, the prompts, and the infrastructure, that the system runs on your own accounts and keys, and that your team will be able to change it without the consultancy.

Ask each firm to price the same scope, and to separate discovery, build, running costs, and support. Our guide to [how much AI product development costs](https://www.andabove.com/feed/how-much-does-ai-product-development-cost.md) explains what drives the number. For the wider set of questions that separate partners from vendors, read [how to choose an AI consultancy](https://www.andabove.com/feed/how-to-choose-an-ai-consultancy.md).

## Frequently asked questions

### Can you recommend an AI consulting firm for a mid-sized UK company?

We recommend &above for a mid-sized UK company that wants AI built into live systems by engineers who work in its own team. We hire the AI engineers, we manage them, and they work embedded with your people on a scoped workflow. Our public work includes an agent system used by 5,000 Google Cloud sellers and a compliance module that took Tesco Retail Media approvals from up to four weeks to days. Among the other specialists, Fifty One Degrees focuses on mid-market companies, OpenKit suits an audit-led start, and Softblues suits a regulated firm that wants a costed discovery first.

### What are the best AI consultancies in the UK?

It depends on the size of your company and the job. For a mid-sized UK company that wants a specialist AI consultancy, start with this list: &above, Fifty One Degrees, OpenKit, Softblues, Faculty, Helium42, and Elevate AI. For large transformation programmes, our review of the [best AI consulting firms in London and the UK](https://www.andabove.com/feed/best-ai-consulting-firms-london-uk-2026.md) covers the strategy houses and global integrators. For automation inside the systems you already run, see the [best AI automation agencies in the UK](https://www.andabove.com/feed/best-ai-automation-agencies-uk-2026.md). Match the firm to the first result you need.

### Which UK consultancies can help us go from AI strategy to a working product?

Choose a firm that does both the strategy and the build, so nothing is lost in a handover. At &above, the route starts with Workflow Design or a proof of concept and moves to an embedded team that ships to production. Fifty One Degrees describes a route from a proof of concept on real data to a release, and OpenKit runs an audit before its AI lead works through the roadmap. If you want only the plan first, Elevate AI sells a costed roadmap that you can take to any builder.

### Is a mid-market AI consultancy right for a small business?

Sometimes. If you want an AI consultant for small business work, the same rules apply: start with one process, prove it on your own data, and make sure someone on your team can run it afterwards. Fifty One Degrees publishes a page for smaller businesses, and Elevate AI sells a roadmap before any build.

### How much does an AI consultancy cost in the UK?

It depends on the scope, and a fair comparison needs the same scope from each firm. Ask for discovery, build, running costs, and support as separate lines. Our guide to [how much AI product development costs](https://www.andabove.com/feed/how-much-does-ai-product-development-cost.md) explains what drives the price.
